Communicating the importance of cybersecurity to the wider business is not easy - but it has never been more important. We invited Co-Founder of Cyber London, Simon Newman, to share his experiences with us: 

“Lots of organizations I speak to sadly don't see cyber as a priority. And it's really interesting, there's been lots of talk recently about how do we get boards to become more aware, more interested in cybersecurity (...) but unfortunately, it isn't a priority for the vast majority of organizations. However, we tend to see behaviour change happen, and we see people go into the market looking for products and services, only once they've been a victim to a cyber incident, which is obviously not when we'd rather that conversation take place.”

It’s true, of course, that communicating the value of cybersecurity is straightforward when an incident happens. This is when the costs associated with a data leak are most tangible: fines, reputational damage, business continuity, disaster recovery - the list goes on. This is also how a blame-culture and negative attitudes towards IT and cyber in general begin to develop. 

Naturally, when it comes to cybersecurity, it pays to be prepared, yet IT budgets remain strapped and resource thin. So how do IT leaders engage the business positively in preventative cybersecurity efforts?
